Colorectal health is about more than just treatment – it’s about doing what is necessary to prevent future problems

Colorectal health is about more than just treatment – it’s about doing what is necessary to prevent future problems, too. Dr. Fulmes and the healthcare team at Health Institute are dedicated to your health – now and in the future.

You already know that patients trust us for our innovative, effective, and comprehensive medicalsurgical, and integrative medicine treatments. We also happen to be committed to excellence in preventive care.

Colon cancer is entirely preventable – with regular screenings. A colonoscopy is a safe, painless, and accurate screening for colorectal cancer. It consists of an examination of the large intestine and can identify the presence of any precancerous polyps, which can be immediately removed before the growths have a chance to turn into cancer. Colonoscopies are performed by Dr. Fulmes and last approximately 30-60 minutes.

Medications will be given via your veins to make you feel relaxed. During the colonoscopy, the doctor uses a colonoscope that transmits an image of the lining of your colon so the doctor can visually examine it during the procedure for any abnormalities. The colonoscope is inserted through the rectum and advanced to the other end of the large intestine. The scope bends, so the doctor can move it around the curves of your colon.

You may feel mild cramping during the procedure. You can reduce the cramping by taking several slow, deep breaths during the procedure. When the doctor has finished, the colonoscope is slowly withdrawn while the lining of your bowel is carefully examined. It is recommended that most adults over the age of 50 have a colonoscopy, although some people with certain risk factors may need to undergo a colonoscopy earlier than 50. The findings of the exam, as well as your health and history, will determine how often you should have a colonoscopy. Ask your doctor what type of schedule may be right for you. A colonoscopy can truly be a lifesaving procedure.
